Valentine Review

Valentine
Written by: Kimberly Loth
Series: The Dragon Kings #3
published: June 24, 2016

Goodreads synopsis:
Three kings will arise. One from the land. One from the sea. One from fire.
Hazel’s entire world is turned upside down after her brother Rowan goes missing. Everyone believes he was eaten by a dragon. Everyone but Hazel’s sister, Aspen, that is.
Hazel has never heard of the dragon prophecy before. She knew about dragons, of course. Her sister, Aspen, made sure of that even though Hazel would have preferred to stay ignorant of the vicious creatures. But the more Hazel learns about Aspen and their family’s connection to the dragons, the less she wishes she knew.
Val never wanted to be king. He never even considered it a possibility. But now the prophecy’s fulfillment has begun, and it starts with him. His journey begins by training with Obsidian. In the process, he learns secrets from his past that shatters everything he knows..
On the way to mainland from Hawaii, Hazel and Val’s worlds collide and will soon have to rely on each other to find Rowan and prevent a human-dragon war.

Brandi's Thoughts:

***Contains Spoilers***

I can never say anything bad about Kimberly's books. Love them all and this is no different. The group finally figures out who The human killer is. I think it's kinda poetic how it taken care of too. In the first book, Aspen was raped by Marcellus and Sid took care of him. This novel, Theo traumatized Hazel and her bf, Val, took care of him. Each taking care of their women. Loved it like always. Off to read the next.

Aspen Review

Aspen
Written By: Kimberly Loth
Series: The Dragon Kings #2
published: April 4, 2016

Goodreads Synopsis:
Sid thought the deaths would end when Marcellus died.
But he thought wrong.
Reeling from the loss of those around him, Sid sets off, not only to avenge the deaths of those he loves, but also to find a way to save his own life.
But the closer he gets to answers, the more people he puts in danger.
Only Sid has the power to end the killer's reign. But it might cost him the one thing he holds most precious.

This thrilling follow-up to Obsidian is a journey of love, death, and betrayal and answers the one question everyone’s been asking:

Is Aspen alive?

Brandi's Thoughts:

More and more dragons in this book and its wonderful! I love anything Kimberly Loth writes and I am super happy I started her dragon series. It's unlike anything I've read. The characters have good depth and they keep you guessing.

Reading the first couple pages I actually thought she did what I was scared of. (probably doesn't make sense til you read it lol). Thank goodness though, she didn't. Phew, bullet dodged. Aspens brother Rowan finally gets more outgoing and faces his fears and I love that. Seeing his progression and him finding out that working out is a good release for all that anxiety and fear, it's definitely relatable. Him and Skye is beautiful, I wish Skye would feel the same way that he does. And isn't Runa just the cutest thing!

Oh and I totally called it! I was right about who the murdering Dragon was! Can't wait for Sid finds out. Ohhhhh there will be drama lol.

Off to the next book!

Obsidian Review

Obsidian
Written By: Kimberly Loth
Published: February 17, 2017
Series: The Dragon Kings #1

Goodreads synopsis:

Seventeen-year-old Aspen is a skydiving, rock climbing, adrenaline junky. All her life, she’s been fascinated by the dragons who roam near her home in Yellowstone Park. Yes, Dragons. Though no human has ever gotten close enough to touch one. Except Aspen. While most people avoid the national parks because of the resident dragons, Aspen spends most of her free time in search of the feared and misunderstood creatures. For her, studying the dragons is a way to escape a painful past and avoid getting too close to anyone. She’d rather track dragons in the wild and through the lens of her camera than talk to real people. But then Aspen meets a hot new guy at school, Sid King. He’s the one person she’s ever met who shares her obsession with all things dragon. But even as she feels strangely drawn to the mysterious boy, she senses he’s hiding his own set of dark and powerful secrets. When hikers start turning up dead in the park, everyone suspects the formidable predators. Unless Aspen can prove their innocence, every one of her beloved dragons is in danger of eradication. After Aspen and Sid uncover a sinister plot behind the brutal attacks, Aspen can no longer deny that Sid somehow knows more about the deaths than he should and the secrets they both keep threaten to rip their lives apart forever.

Brandi's thoughts:

First off I took a leap reading this as I've never read and dragon books and barely watch anything with dragons beside the movie Reign of Fire :). I only started this because I love Kimberly's other series: Stella and Sol & Omega Mu Alpha Brothers. That being said I absolutely loved this!! I cannot believe I waited so long but at least now I have 4 more books that are ready to be read! :)

I was not expecting narration to come from the dragon itself, I think I was expecting something more along the lines of Petes Dragon lol. This was way better. Halfway thru this I ordered the next book on Amazon. The dragons were beautiful in this book.

Kimberly leaves us hanging with a huge cliffhanger and I'm left with, "Oh no she cannot do that!" So now I am off to start reading the next book, Aspen. Gotta see what happens next.

P.S. Love the names!

Caraval Review

Caraval
written by: Stephanie Garber
Published: January 31, 2017

Goodreads Synopsis:
Remember, it’s only a game…

Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.

But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic. And whether Caraval is real or not, Scarlett must find Tella before the five nights of the game are over or a dangerous domino effect of consequences will be set off, and her beloved sister will disappear forever.

Welcome, welcome to Caraval…beware of getting swept too far away.

My thoughts:
I couldn't put this book down. I loved the plot and the characters. I was a little skeptical at first just because the first few pages were a little slow but that was the only slow part of the entire story. Scarlett was lovable and likeable, while Donatella seemed obnoxious throughout the story. Julian seemed egotistical and uncaring in the beginning but softened throughout the story. The world of Caraval was wonderful and magical! The way it ended was spectacular and I look forward to more from Stephanie Garber.

Dark Liaison Review

written by: J.D. Brown
Published: May 29, 2013
Series: Ema Marx #2

Goodreads Synopsis:
Ema Marx wishes her life would go back to normal, but there’s nothing normal about being a Romani-Vampyre with an ancestor who wants you dead. Apollyon is back, wreaking havoc on the lives of everyone she cares about while plotting her demise. Ema thought she would find a new best friend in her trainer, Bridget, until the exotic vampire vies for Jesu’s attention. Jesu can date who he wants, right? Ema has more important things to worry about, like honing her powers. When Apollyon’s thugs appear out of the shadows to attack her, Ema knows it’s time to take action. But everyone else has other plans in mind. One thing is for certain, being under house arrest in the German vampyre king’s castle was not part of her plan to save the day.

Brandi's Thoughts:
Dark Liaison by J.D. Brown
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

She's done it again. Picks up where the first book stopped. Im really liking Jesu and Ema. Although, I could've slapped him after the pool scene! (You'll just have to read it lol) This was a great read, I sped through it, I probably missed some for reading so fast, most likely will be reading it again later.

Now on to Dark Becoming

Dark Heirloom Review

written by: J.D. Brown
Published: March 1, 2012
Series: Ema Marx #1

Goodreads Synopsis:

"You're a vampire" is so not what Ema Marx wants to hear when she wakes from a two-day coma in a cryptic yet exquisite castle in northern Finland. Unfortunately, it explains a lot. Like why she's able to see in the dark and walk through solid objects. What she doesn't understand is why the other vampires expect her to have all the answers. It's their fault she turned into one of them...right?
Jalmari's hatred for his old-man intensifies when he's ordered to bring that troublesome girl to their castle. He has a clan to run; there's no time for babysitting newborn vampires no matter how they were converted to their culture. But when a two-thousand-year-old premonition threatens to take the crown and his life, Jalmari sees no other choice than to take out the catalyst
, Ema Marx.
Fortunately for Ema, she could also be the clan's only savior. The race to figure out her vampiric origins is on. And maybe she'll get the hang of the blood-drinking gig along the way.

Brandi's Thoughts:
Dark Heirloom by J.D. Brown
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

J.D. Brown pulls you right in from page 1 with Ema being assaulted in an alley not once but twice back to back days. Then she wakes up in another country! All in the first chapter!

So Ema becomes a Vampire and no one knows which clan she is from. Which I like that there are different clans of vampires and vampyres. Never known of a difference. I feel so bad for Jalmari with Apollyon in his head giving him commands that has to be followed weather Jalmari wants to or not. It gets sketchy in one scene. (you'll have to read it to find out) Jalmari also has a younger brother, Jesu, who is adorable and I want him and Ema to be together :)

Excited to read the next book in the series, Dark Liaison
